Following the ”Rules” to Lose Weight

When you're trying to lose weight, do you pick the diet based on whether you think you can follow all the rules or not?  

What happens if you don't follow all the rules, do you quit the diet?

What would happen if there weren't any rules, but realistic guidelines that helped you find what works for you and you could live it out for the rest of your life?
